Girolamo Kapsberger was a German composer born in Italy. Borrowing its name from Kapsberger’s well known toccata, the ensemble L’Arpeggiata was founded by Christina Pluhar in 2000. The sound of the ensemble, exclusively made up of plucked string instruments, is immediately recognizable.

The mission of L’Arpeggiata is to explore the forgotten pieces by unknown Roman, Neapolitans and Spanish composers of the early Baroque age. The ensemble’s guiding principle is the practice of instrumental improvisation along with the restitution of the complexity of the Baroque instrumentarium in its purest tradition. During its concerts/performances, L’Arpeggiata combines instruments, voices and other arts, such as dance and theater, that were inseparable at that time. The ensemble also seeks to collaborate with other musical genres, including jazz and traditional music.

In France as well as abroad, L’Arpeggiata’s productions have been unanimously praised by the public and the critics. Its discography, first on the label Alpha and now on Naïve, has received numerous awards. L’Arpeggiata has recently started a collaboration with Emi/Classics.
